OnePlus 6T (8GB | 128GB)

Here we go.

1. Enable Navigational Gestures

OxygenOS version 9 on the OnePlus 6T comes with a lot of bells and whistles. One of the best features is the navigational gestures. The noteworthy thing about them is that you get to utilize the most of the phone’s screen real estate by navigating around in style. To enable the standard navigation gestures, go to the Buttons & gestures and tap on Navigation bar & gestures. Once in, select navigation gestures. You’ll notice that a set of intuitive gestures has replaced the navigation bar. From now on, swipe up from the bottom to go to the home screen. To go back, swipe from the lower left/right bottom. Simple, right? If your previous phone had this gesture navigation support, the chances are that you may be looking for something new. If yes, skip on to the next tip.

2. Multitask like a Pro

Android Pie on the OnePlus 6T brings an intuitive gesture-based navigation system. Instead of the conventional navigation bar, there’s a pill-shaped button that doubles as Home. And thanks to that, multitasking on the OnePlus 6T is a child’s play. To swipe through all the open/recent apps, you’d need to drag the pill-shaped button a bit up, and then slide it to the right or left. To quickly switch between apps, gently swipe the button left or right. However, using the split-screen mode for the first time can be a bit of a confusing affair. To engage the split screen mode, open the recent apps, tap on the three-dot menu, and select Split screen. Once done, select a compatible second app, and you’ll be sorted.

3. Change the Fingerprint Sensor Animation

Sure, the default screen animation for the in-display fingerprint sensor is stunning. But if you’d rather have a toned-down animation, you can change that easily. For that, go to Security & lock screen > Fingerprints > Fingerprint animation effect, and choose the one you like. I adore the Stripe effect animation the most.

4. Turn Gaming Mode On

The mobile gamers will love the combination of the Snapdragon 845 and the Gaming Mode. Aimed at delivering an uninterrupted experience, Gaming Mode allows you to disable calls and notifications, especially when you indulge in an adrenaline rushing game of PUBG or Asphalt 9. You can find the settings under Utilities > Gaming mode. Tap on the Add Apps button to add games. The next time you launch a game, it’ll automatically trigger the Gaming Mode.

5. Tweak the DND Mode

Another option which you must enable is the DND option. Unlike older phones, now you can tweak the DND settings so that it kicks in at a particular time. To make such changes, go to Sounds > Do Not Disturb and tap on Turn on Automatically. Next, select Sleeping and specify the time and the days. That’s it. No annoying calls or notifications alarms to distract while you work.

6. Smart Boost

If you followed the OnePlus 6T launch, you must know about the Smart Boost feature. This cool feature meant for game lovers and power users boosts the performance of the device by about 20%. As you may have guessed, this particular feature is a tad difficult to find. Also, there’s no shortcut in the Quick Settings. To turn this mode on, go to Settings > Utilities > OnePlus Laboratory and activate Smart Boost.

7. Keep Apps Hidden

Hidden Space was introduced along with the OnePlus 6 to keep apps hidden from the app drawer. To access Hidden Space, open the app drawer and slide gently from the left edge. To add apps, tap on the Plus icon at the top-right corner. To unhide apps, long press on a particular app and hit Unhide.

8. Change Accent Colors Using Hex Code

The previous versions of OnePlus allowed using only a few colors as Accent colors. Thankfully, with the new OnePlus 6T, you can choose from the whole gamut of colors which means that you can also put your favorite shade of fuschia as your accent color. To top that, you can enter the exact Hex Color Code. To make this change, navigate to Display > Accent color, tap on the Paint icon, and enter the code at the bottom.

9. Unlock Like a Pro

OnePlus 6T’s Face Unlock feature is undoubtedly blazing fast. However, I feel that this method has a tiny flaw. For instance, you can’t just check the lock screen notifications without unlocking the phone. That can quickly get on your nerves. Thankfully, it too can be tweaked. All you have to do is go to Face Unlock settings and disable the ‘Auto unlock after the screen is on’ option. That will land you in the lock screen instead of the home screen. If you want to go to the home screen, swipe left on the screen.

10. Take Screenshots via Gestures

It’s no secret that OnePlus phone has its own set of cool customizable gestures. From launching your favorite app to adding contacts, these gestures are very helpful to get your work done quickly. Out of these, my favorite and most-used gesture is the three-finger screenshot. All you need to do is drag three fingers down to grab a screenshot. No more business of pressing the power button and the volume button. To enable it, go to Buttons & gestures > Quick gestures and toggle the switch for Three-finger screenshot.

11. Lock Apps

Don’t want to kill an app accidentally? How about locking it? With the new OnePlus 6T, it’s a simple task. Just bring up the recent apps and scroll through the list until you have found the app. Tap on the three-dot menu and select Lock. There’s a nifty way to lock the OnePlus 6T. All you need to do is double-tap on an empty area of your home screen, and the rest of the job will be taken care off by the phone. Great, right? Pinch-in on the home screen and tap on Home Settings and toggle the switch for Double tap to lock.

12. Tweak the Ambient Display

For the busy millennials, the ambient screen of a phone is more than just convenient. Not only does it let you check notifications without unlocking the device, but you can also see the time and battery levels by just tapping on the screen. However, the best feature is that you can switch between different clock styles. To select a particular style, go to the Display settings > Ambient display > Clock style and choose one. Aside from it, don’t forget to check the Tap the Screen option. This one lets you check for messages and notifications when you tap on the screen.

13. Hide That Notch

Agreed that OnePlus has significantly reduced the notch area, and the current waterdrop notch looks beautiful. But in spite of the different approach, it’s is still a polarizing design concept. So if you’re someone who’d rather do away with it, it can be easily arranged. Of course, this would mean that you’d lose out slightly on valuable screen space. To hide the notch on the OnePlus 6T, go to Display > Botch display and choose the second option. Bye bye, notch.
