Design and Mounting
It’s 2020, and the priority of almost all gadgets is design. After all, you wouldn’t want to be stuck with a device that looks straight out from the 90s, right? At least, I wouldn’t. Thankfully, when it comes to the Nixplay Seed frame, you won’t be disappointed. It has a slim form factor with tapered edges that gives it a modern look. And that’s not all. The back has a quirky honeycomb design, which not only adds to its look but also helps in the grip. If we talk numbers, the Nixplay Seed just measures around 10.2 x 1 x 6.7-inches and weighs around 1.06 pounds, making it very portable. Perhaps the best thing about the Seed frame is the integrated power cord that doubles as the stand. And needless to say, it adds to the elegance. Plus, it’s durable enough to withstand the elements of nature. And well, you can always adjust the stand as per your viewing angle. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that this 10.1-inch digital frame is strictly a table-top frame. There are no options to wall mount it. On the upside, it comes with auto-rotate feature meaning you can both place it in the portrait or landscape mode. Plus, it’s available in Wood-effect and Black. As opposed to that, the Pix-Star Wi-Fi digital frame has a simple and somber appearance. There’s no honeycomb design; neither is there any integrated power cables. Instead, you’ll find a simple stand with slim borders on the three sides. The bottom border is a tad thicker than the others and gives it an appearance of a smart speaker like the Echo Show. It measures around 10.6 x 1.1 x 7.8-inches and weighs around 1.57 pounds. That aside, this Pix-Star frame can double up as a table-top frame or you can mount it to the wall, thanks to the mounting holes at the back. All you need to do is find a good spot where you will have no trouble in routing the power cord. Slide the cover off from the back, and you will be able to see the mounting holes.
Features: Frame and App
A device is pretty much useless if the features aren’t up to the mark. As far as hardware specs are concerned, the Nixplay Seed comes with a single 1.5W (mono) speaker, infra-red sensors, and a Hu-motion sensor. The speakers can come in handy when you play videos on your Nixplay Seed. And well, the volume can be modified as per your preference. They aren’t that loud but proves to be quite great at what they do. However, the Seed doesn’t have a touchscreen display. The company ships a remote with it that lets you do most of the setup, like entering passwords while connecting to the internet. Note that once you lose the remote, tweaking the settings or changing photos can prove to be difficult. Many have pointed out in the reviews that the customer care of Nixplay has been excellent in assisting customers as well as in replacing items. On top of that, this digital frame comes with a built-in sleep timer, motion sensor, and Bluetooth connectivity. The motion sensor has a range of around 2.5 meters and users have had many positive things to say about it. The dedicated app, which is compatible with both iOS and Android, lets you share photos, videos, and images to it directly. You can make a playlist for photos and have them display as a slideshow. The app has a simple and clean interface, and at the same time, it’s quite easy to use. And for the social media savvy, you can also pull photos from your Facebook and Instagram accounts as well as services like Google Photos, Dropbox, and Flickr. Apart from that, this frame offers a superb email feature that displays a photo when you email it to an account. On this ground, the Pix-Star photo frame sports almost the same feature. You can share photos and videos right from the app or via email. Plus, it can also integrate with OneDrive and Google Drive (hence the name). You simply need to link your Pix-Star account to the cloud service you like and drop the photos there. At the same time, syncing is also great. Moreover, you can also display pictures straight from a USB drive or SD card. And the built-in shuffle algorithm makes sure that you do not have to look at the same pictures every day. And the best part is that whenever a new picture is uploaded, the frame will notify you with a ding. And this comes into use when you have a couple of your extended family and friends in the network. Overall, the UI is great, and if you find it difficult to adjust the pictures, you can always use the remote to fine-tune them.
Picture Quality
While both frames have an IPS display, the aspect ratio and the resolution are very much different. The Pix-Star frame has an XGA resolution of 1024×768 pixels, and it comes with an aspect ratio of 4:3. The latter gives it a slightly unconventional design when compared to traditional photo frames. The same goes for the Nixplay Seed as well. With a resolution of 1280 x 800 and an aspect ratio of 16:10, the Seed photo frame produces a bright and sharp display.
Pick the Best Photo Frame
Both the digital frames pack a lot of common features. For one, you can email your pictures, and they will be displayed almost instantly. On top of that, you can link your cloud accounts like Dropbox, Google Photos (see Dropbox vs Google Photos), Flickr, along with your social media accounts. More importantly, both have great companion apps that are clean and easy to understand. And this quality makes the frames ideal for both seniors and tech-savvy persons alike. However, when it comes to choosing one, I’d rather side with the Nixplay Seed. I loved its slim profile and the conventional 16:9 aspect ratio. More importantly, I loved that it comes with Alexa compatibility meaning you can have Alexa turn it on or off or to show your pictures. However, there have been some complaints regarding the stand since it tends to topple over. Though the Pix-Star Wi-Fi cloud digital frame gives you the independence to choose your mounting, the design is a tad too unconventional for me. However, that’s my opinion. Furthermore, the frame packs plenty of miscellaneous features like alarm, games, and you can also use it to set reminders and the likes. So, which one will you choose?
